The Rules Of Play is the avant-rock brainchild of guitarist Doug Snyder and drummer Bob Thompson and features the 43 minute, magnum opus title track, which was recorded live in concert at Antioch College in Ohio. As might be expected, the piece ebbs and flows dynamically with faster, riff-driven, rhymically dense sections set off by mid-tempo improvisational moods. Opprobruim has spoken of Snyder/Thompson's music thusly, "I cannot think of anything comparable being made anywhere else on the planet earth at this time. The playing is all-round splendid." The Rules Of Play is fleshed out by two shorter cuts recorded in Thompson's home studio.
