Acoustic fingerstylist George Robinson's first instrumental release, Refuge features contemporary solo guitar compositions, drawing on influences from classical, jazz, rock and new age music. The nine selections tell stories ranging from opposing forces grappling on a field of battle ("Mars Rising") to a bittersweet return to a place that used to be ("Homecoming"), and from a game of balance, nerves and stamina ("Highwire") to a meditation on a fine thing had, and lost ("Paradise Lost"). The instrument Robinson uses on his recordings is a hybrid nylon string guitar, incorporating characteristics of both acoustic and electric instruments. The recording process for Refuge utilized modern sound modeling technologies, applied to transform the natural sound of the guitar to complement the personality of each composition, yet maintaining a consistent musical character.
