Silkroad/Kinu-Michi - A Day is Japanese guitarist Koji Tsumoto's fourth all instrumental CD (continuing the musical trail laid out by "Silkroad/Kinu-Michi - 1st" and "Silkroad/Kinu-Michi - 2nd"), and this one impresses as the next in the series of "the ultimate modal instrumental progressive rock from Asia" - and a particular staff favorite here at Guitar Nine. Every self-respecting fan of rock instrumental music should have all four of Tsumot's solo releases - no excuses. This time, guitarists Jon Finn (his professor at the Berklee College of Music) and Alessandro Benvenuti contribute solos to "Lifetime Friends". Tsumoto continues to forge links between amazing soloing and aggressive (or clever) riffs, in a hard rock / progressive seting. Tsumoto's guitar playing travels a lot of musical ground, almost paralleling the story (in Japanese, in the liner notes) of the Silk Road on which the album is based. The packaging here is also unique and very upscale - it serves as its own conversation piece. Essential and highly recommended.
