David Nathan at the All Music Guide writes, "Return Of The Hydra follows Michael Coppola's exceptional first album "Enter The Hydra". The uninitiated would swear that a rhythm guitar is also part of the group, so much music and resonance does Coppola get from his instrument. The interaction between guitar and bass seems intuitive." High praise for Coppola's trio CD (with Michael Nunno on electric bass and Kurt Berglund on drums) featuring seven standards and two original tracks. Coppola himself states, "The selections on this recording are among my favorites. For about 25 years, I'd been hoping to record "Parisian Thoroughfare"; "Gee, Baby" was a last minute thought at the end of the session. The others were tunes I had thought about documenting at different points in the years between." Lee Prosser at jazzreview.com sums it up, "Flawless in approach and enjoyable... the musicianship on this collection is memorable."
