The year is 1982 and the SB-2 is launched into the musical stratosphere with the latest Leo Fender Saddle Lock bridge and pickup innovations. Decades later, G&L pays tribute to that iconic bass with this incarnation of the G&L SB-2. It grooves comfortably thanks to a Medium "C"-shaped maple neck covered with a sleek maple fingerboard. Compared to the 1982 SB-2, this alder-bodied bass benefits from enhancements in sculpting, making it more sleek and balanced. This iteration of the SB-2 is a veritable workhorse, ripe with a less-is-more visual appeal and incredible sonic capabilities hidden within. It features Leo Fender-designed Magnetic Field Design pickups — a J-style single-coil in the bridge and a P-style split-coil in the middle. Plug in the SB-2 and buckle up for a smooth ride through massive sound that’s balanced with detail.
If you’re a straightforward kind of bassist, then you’re going to love the playability of the G&L SB-2. Its alder body is carved into a familiar shape that’s ready to rock. At the neck, your hand will gravitate over a bolt-on maple neck carved to a Medium “C” shape. Compiled with a smooth maple fingerboard and 21 medium-jumbo nickel silver frets, it’s the perfect bass to ease into a groove and jam smoothly for hours — or get serious and pull out some slap technique. Chrome hardware finishes this bass off with a classic appeal and melds seamlessly with its less-is-more aesthetic.
After you’ve familiarized yourself with the comfortable design of the SB-2, it’s time to plug-in and put its pickups through their paces. The SB-2 flaunts a duo of Leo Fender-designed Magnetic Field Design single-coils that provide massive power with all the detail and finesse needed for capturing their authentic tone. Dual volume controls put the power in your hands to decide how you mix these two boisterous broncos. Whether it’s a Jamerson groove or Jaco fill you’re laying down, whether it’s a driving McKagan rock riff or a frenetic Flea slap-and-pop, the ultra-versatile pickups in the G&L SB-2 have you covered.
The SB-2’s Saddle Lock bridge reduces lateral movement of the saddle pieces by tightening an Allen screw on the side of the bridge. Additionally, the Saddle-Lock bridge has a solid protrusion on its backside that is sunk firmly into the instrument’s body wood. Together, these two features make it easier for string energy to travel into the body and translate into a rich, resonant, and sustaining sound.
