Classical guitarist Liona Boyd's The Spanish Album features included works by well known Spanish composers, as well as non-Spanish composers who have appropriated its entrancing rhetoric. Cuban Ernesto Lecuona's Malagan dance is as poetic as any Spaniard's, as is Mexican Agustin Lara's impression of Granada. Liona's own portrait of Madrid reveals her exceptional gifts as a composer, as well as her assimilation of the Spanish musical syntax. From it's roots in 16th century has become the quinessential instrument of chivalrous courtship, and Liona thus serenades us, playing beneath our proverbial balcony, entrancing us, fetching us away.
